Making the most of your Yell Online advert


Q1. I haven't taken out any advertising with Yell but my business is listed. How do I claim my business?

Firstly, visit Yell online and search for your business. Click on "More information". If you can't find your business on Yell, contact us. See Figure 1.

Once you have found your free business listing, click on "Add photos, opening hours and more information" to login. See Figure 2.

If you've not registered with us before, click on the "Register" button. See Figure 3 & Figure 4.

After registration you'll be asked to confirm that you are the business owner. Please read the terms and then click "Claim this advert". See Figure 5.

Q2. How do I make the most of my Yell Online adverts?

It's now easier than ever to add information to your Yell prominence advert or listing.

Adding more detail to your Yell online advert will help to enhance your online presence – it’s possible to update images, your location, opening information, special offers and even add a link to your company website if you have one.

In fact you can include any details around who you are and what you do that will help you get found, stand out from the competition and encourage customers to get in touch.

And the more information you add about your business and the more you keep it up to date, the easier it is for customers to find you via Yell and search engines like Google.


It is key that you include as much information about your business as possible in your Profile Page.

Before you start writing, think about what customers want from your business - and the words and phrases they'd use when they're searching online for a business like yours.

Think about what sets you apart from your competitors. You might want to mention how long you've been trading and any professional accreditations you have. You want to promote your business so tell people what you do and the services you offer. If you're running a promotion, you should mention that too, but don't forget to keep it up to date. Your bullet points should explain the key services your business offers. Upload your logo and photos to bring your business to life.


Hints and Tips

  1. Regularly update your Yell Profile Page information.
  2. Create Profile Pages for all your business branches.
  3. Use words and phrases that you know customer will use to search for your kind of business.
  4. Ask satisfied customers to review your business on Yell.
  5. Add a video about your business if you have one.
  6. Include a link to your business website.
  7. Include an email address to make it easy for customers to contact you out of normal trading hours.
  8. To save time, edit multiple adverts at once.

Q3. How do I update my business listing?

This is the home page within Edit My Business. It displays the information already held about your business and also prompts you to insert further information to help customers find you. Use the navigation on the left or the preview to add/edit your business Profile Page information. See Figure 1.

Q4. How do I update my business description?

It’s important that your customers can quickly and easily see who you are, what you do, and what sets you apart from your competitors, so try to use the words and phrases that potential customers will use when searching for a business like yours as you fill this out. All information in your Profile Pages will be used to match what you do with what customers are looking for within Yell and all major search engines. You can type in up to 1000 characters and can see how much room you have left by looking at the counter underneath. Once you have completed this, click "Save". See Figure 1.

Q5. How do I update my business headline?

Many businesses use this section to throw a spotlight on a special offer or promotion. You could also use it to draw attention to a unique feature or something your business can be proud of, such as an award or accreditation. This is a key part of your Profile Page that helps customers decide to contact you before your competition. There is a limit of 180 characters and you can see how much room you have left by looking at the counter underneath. Once complete click "Save". See Figure 1.

Q6.How do I update my business services and products?

This area allows you to list all the products and services you provide. We offer a helping hand by listing the terms used most often by customers when searching for your kind of business. So if you offer any of those products or services listed, make sure you select them to give you the best chance of being found (click on the plus next to the service suggestions).

It's possible you will offer things not on this list so add these too, as you may offer a product or service that is more niche. Adding this depth of rich information about you business in your Profile Page will help Yell and search engines match your business offering with exactly what customers are looking for.

You can edit, reorder or delete the bullets - just roll over them and click on the pencil/edit button or double-click on the text. Up to 40 different products and services can be displayed. Once complete click "Save". See Figure 1

Q7. How do I update my opening hours?

Setting your opening hours is easy. All you need to do is drag the start and end sliders to the correct times. If you happen to be closed at any point in the day simply click "Add break" and a set of sliders will appear inbetween allowing you to set your closed period.

You can easily set yourself open 24hrs or closed by clicking the links below each days slider and if your open the same times most days its easy to duplicate a days time across the week by clicking repeat all week.

We have provided some common presets at the top of the page that will automatically set up a weeks worth of opening hours that you can then adjust to your needs.

If you prefer not to show any opening hours simply click the link to the top right "I dont want to show opening hours" and all the sliders will be greyed out. See Figure 1.

Q8. How can I edit my payment methods?

Selected payment methods are marked with a tick, if you wish to toggle the payment methods you accept simply click on them in the list and then click save when you happy with your selection.

Q9. How do I add photos?

The photo gallery is a great way to showcase your business and can help customers decide to get in touch.

You can include your company logo and select this to brand your Yell Listing.

Many businesses choose imagery from their website to deliver a smooth transition for customers clicking from Yell to their company website. Up to 20 images can be displayed. Once complete click "Save".

To reorder your images simply drag and drop the image in the gallery to the position you want.

You can upload the following file formats: JPG, GIF and PNG.

We can't resize or treat the image you upload. For best results, we recommend photos are 800 x 600 and your logo is 80 x 60. Each picture you upload cannot be larger than 10MB. See Figure 1.

Q10. Can I update more than one Yell Online advert at the same time?

Yes, you can update the content of more than one Yell Online advert at the same time.

Register or login to your account. From your Account Management home page (below) you can select the Yell Online adverts you’d like to edit. Click the small box beside the ones you’d like to select [1], and then click ‘Edit selected adverts’ [2]. See Figure 1.

This button will only appear once you've confirmed your Yell order, and we've processed it.

The top bar will show the order number and order lines of the ads you’re now editing. Hovering over each will display key information about that advert [3]. You can click on one to use it as the 'master' from which to make your changes.
Use the links on the left [4] to select the content you'd like to amend. See Figure 2.

Make your changes and then click "Save" at the bottom of the page [5]. You can also check how long it will take for your changes to show on Yell.com. See Figure 3.

We’ll then confirm your changes back to you so that you can see the original content [6], what it’s changing to [7], and the ads that are affected [8]. To confirm your changes, click the dark grey button at the bottom of the page, which will also confirm how many ads are being updated [9]. See Figure 4.

Q11. What standards should my adverts comply with?

Your advertising must comply with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). It is your responsibility to ensure that your advertising conforms. Go to www.asa.org.uk for more details.

Q12. How do I update my business name?

Enter the name of your business here, this will appear at the top of your listing. This cannot be longer than 70 characters.

Q13. How do I update my business address?

To enter your address you can use our address lookup service. Just enter your postcode and/or your house number and hit find address and will find your fall address details. If for some reason your address is not found you can still enter your address manually.

Q14. How do I update my business email address?

Enter your email address here, so that we can let your customers email you using our listing contact form.

Q15. How do I update my business telephone number?

Choose the preset that best suits the telephone number that you are entering eg. Tel, Mobile. If you cannot find one that suitably describes your number then choose the custom option at the bottom and add in your own in the input that appears below.

The telephone number must be a uk based number.

Q16. How do I update my business website address?

Enter the link to your website here, the link must contain the http:// or https:// prefix. If you wish to test that the link you entered is correct click check link to view it in a new window.

The url should be to your company's homepage e.g: http://www.yell.com.

Q17. How do I add bullet points to my advert?

You have the choice of what kind of content you want to appear in the main part of your listing, a short paragraph or a set of bullet points. Click to select which one you would prefer then fill in the form below.

If you choose bullet points you must have a minimum of 3 entered but no more than 6, if you choose freetext then you can write up to 180 characters. See Figure 1.

Q18. How do I add a classification to my advert?

Your current classification is shown at the top of the page. If you wish to change your classification you can use the form below to search what classifications are available and pick the one you would prefer.

Q20. What does the 'Are you sure you want to leave this page' message mean?

If you make changes to a section and then try to navigate away from the page without first saving this message will appear.

This message gives you the option to either stay on the page so you can save your changes or continue to navigate away and lose all your changes.
